IDF soldiers opened fire on two Palestinians who entered a restricted zone near the Israeli border in the northern Gaza Strip Monday.
One of the men died from his wounds, according to Palestinian sources, and the second man was apprehended after a chase, according to Hamas officials cited by Israel Radio.
The Palestinian men were spotted near the border fence and initial reports indicated they were both armed. According to the IDF, soldiers in the area opened fire when the Palestinians refused to retreat from the fence after several warnings.
An IDF official told Walla News that the army believed the men were attempting to carry out a terrorist attack on the nearby kibbutz Nir Am, based on the evidence of tampering.
The official said Israeli residents in the area were instructed to stay indoors while the army determined that the threat had been eliminated.
