A Jerusalem rabbi was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of raping one of his students six years ago, when the girl was 14 years old.
According to reports in the Hebrew-language media, the rabbi was arrested after the girl, now 20, said that the rabbi had raped her while she was a student at an all girls seminary where the rabbi worked.
The name of the rabbi, 60, is being kept under gag order. On Thursday, a judge in the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ordered he be kept behind bars for seven days as the case is investigated.
The woman filed a police complaint saying that he had committed grave sexual offenses against her, including rape.
After receiving the girl’s testimony, the police gathered evidence from family members and sources at the seminary, upon which they decided there was enough to warrant an arrest.

The rabbi’s lawyer, Yehuda Shoshan, dismissed the charges against the rabbi as based upon “libelous falsehood motivated by those with interests” against the rabbi, according to the Ynet news website.
