JTA — Two Jewish teens from London were victims of an acid attack in Zanzibar, in eastern Africa.
Two men on a moped threw acid at the girls Wednesday night as they walked in the island nation’s capital of Stone Town.
Katie Gee and Kristen Trup, both 18, were in their last week of a volunteering trip organized by the company i-to-i. The teenagers volunteered as teachers.
They were discharged from a hospital in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania Thursday morning after suffering non life-threatening injuries to their hands, chests and faces. No motive for the attack has been established, although Zanzibar police have launched a manhunt.
The girls, both members of the Federation for Zionist Youth, are trying to get home to London.
