A kindergarten in Ashdod was evacuated Monday after an old unexploded shell was found during excavations near the building, police said in a statement.

The shell was found on King Solomon Street in the southern port city.

Police sappers called to the scene identified the munition as a 90-millimeter shell. The device was safely removed from the site, police said.

The statement did not explain how the shell may have come to be at the site.

Police noted that old ammunition can be very dangerous due to its unstable condition and warned the public to act responsibly when such items are uncovered.

In February, police found an entire tank buried under sand dunes at the Nitzanim nature reserve in southern Israel which was believed to be older than the State of Israel, an Israel Police spokesperson said at the time.

Police found the military vehicle after it was reported by a minor who told police he saw a tank turret jutting out of a sand dune.
