Israeli team advances to last 5 in Google spacecraft contest
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleThe Israeli nonprofit group SpaceIL has made it to the final five teams selected in a $20 million competition sponsored by Google to send a privately-funded spacecraft to the moon.
The finalists include teams from Japan, India, the United States (two teams), and Israel and “they all have rocket launch contracts to go to the Moon in 2017,” organizers say.
The Google Lunar XPrize is meant to encourage private industry to create new technologies to reach the moon at lower costs than what governments have spent in past lunar expeditions.
