The Lebanese parliament failed to elect a president for the country for the 33rd time, Israel Radio reports.
Earlier reports said lawmakers reached an agreement to elect Suleiman Faranjia, a childhood friend of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
The country has been without a president for more than a year, ever since the term of Michel Sleiman ended.
According to Lebanese law, electing a president necessitates the support of two-thirds of parliament, or 86 out of the 128 parliament members. Only 45 lawmakers were present for today’s debate.
According to a report in Al Ahbar, a paper affiliated with Hezbollah, the Shi’ite terror group will not support any candidate except its political ally Michel Aoun, head of the Free Patriotic Movement.
