President Rivlin critical of law to muffle mosques

President Reuven Rivlin tells a meeting of religious leaders that it would be better to find a compromise before lawmakers pass a law that would limit when mosques can use loudspeakers for the Muslim call to prayer.

“I thought that perhaps such a meeting could have an impact on the whole public, and that it would be a shame that a law should be born which touches on the issue of freedom of faith of a specific group among us,” Rivlin tells the clerics at a meeting at his home.

The draft law is due to go before the Knesset on Wednesday. The planned bill has sparked opposition around the Muslim world, including today from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
