One person was killed and two people were injured in a car explosion in northern Israel on Thursday, an incident police believe to be an underworld assassination attempt.

The explosion occurred on Jabotinsky street in Kiryat Yam, north of Haifa.

All three, men in their 20s, were inside the car when the bomb went off. Paramedics treated them at the scene before taking them to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, with critical, moderate and light wounds, respectively. One was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Two medics with the Magen David Adom ambulance service said that when they got to the scene, the car was on fire.
