An alleged Palestinian gunman was shot dead by Israeli forces during a raid in the West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday, the military and Palestinian health officials said.

The Israel Defense Forces said troops entered the Ein Beit al-Ma’ refugee camp in the city, also known as al-Ein Camp or Camp No. 1, in order to detain a Palestinian suspected of involvement in terror activities.

As troops surrounded a home where the wanted Palestinian was holed up, clashes broke out in the area, according to the military and Palestinian media reports.

The IDF said Palestinian gunmen opened fire toward the Israeli forces, and rioters hurled stones and other objects.

“The forces shot and hit an armed terrorist who fired toward them,” the IDF said.

The Palestinian Authority health ministry said a young man, 23-year-old Muhammad Nada, was fatally shot in the chest by Israeli forces.

No Israeli soldiers were hurt during the raid.

The IDF said the wanted man, named by Palestinian media as Nour al-Bassiouni, was handed over to the Shin Bet security agency for further questioning

Earlier, the IDF said that troops had detained 32 wanted Palestinians during overnight sweeps across the West Bank, with violence in some areas. Two assault rifles were seized in the southern West Bank town of ad-Dhahiriya, the IDF said.

Tensions have remained high in the West Bank, with the military carrying out near-nightly raids amid a series of deadly Palestinian terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank that have killed 25 people since the beginning of the year.

According to a tally by The Times of Israel, 159 West Bank Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the year — most of them during clashes with security forces or while carrying out attacks, but some were uninvolved civilians and others were killed under unclear circumstances.
