Yehoram Gaon, a famous Israeli singer and actor, is now also an honorary consul of Honduras in Israel. The appointment was approved by Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman on Tuesday.
Liberman wished Gaon luck, and hoped he would help promote the cultural relations between the two countries.
This is not Gaon’s first stint as a diplomat. The winner of the Israel prize in 2004 and the star of the 1966 hit “Kazablan,” who also played Yoni Netanyahu in the 1977 film “Operation Entebbe,” acted as the honorary consul of Chile until a few years ago.
According to Maariv, the trend of singers-turned-diplomats will continue, as Israeli singer and song writer Tzvika Pik is set to be named the honorary Consul of Poland in Israel’s southern city of Eilat.
Honorary consuls usually perform ceremonial and commerical functions on behalf of the country they represent.
