Two killed in fiery crash on coastal highway
Men aged 30, 55 declared dead at scene following two-car collision on Route 2 south of Haifa, three others injured, as 2024 continues to see uptick in road fatalities
Two people were killed and three others were injured, one seriously, when two vehicles collided on Route 2 south of Haifa Thursday, authorities said.
The fatalities were identified by the Magen David Adom emergency service as two men aged 30 and 55.
Both were declared dead at the scene after being extracted from the mangled wreck, according to MDA.
Three others were transported to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, including a 30-year-old man in serious condition and two women who suffered light injuries, MDA said.
Police said the collision involved two vehicles and resulted in a fire.
It was not immediately clear how the crash occurred or if the victims had been in the same vehicle.
The wreck occurred near the Atlit Interchange, about 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Haifa. Route 2, a major artery also known as the Coastal Highway, was briefly blocked to northbound traffic due to the crash, according to police.
The identities of the victims were not immediately available.
As of Thursday morning, a total of 276 people had been killed in traffic accidents in 2024 so far, according to a daily report released by the Traffic Safety Authority.
The tally marks a 17 percent increase from the same period in 2023.
