One dead, one injured in Nazareth shooting

A 19-year-old man was killed and a second man moderately injured in a shooting in the northern city of Nazareth late Friday night.

Police arrested two 19-year-old men on suspicion of involvement in the shooting and murder, Israel Radio reported. Ynet reported that police arrested an 18-year-old and 21-year-old in connection to the crime.

The two victims, members of the same family, were riding a moped in the Galilean city’s eastern neighborhood when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them, Ynet reported. The 19-year-old victim was shot in the upper torso and was taken to the Italian Hospital in Nazareth in serious condition. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The second victim, a 24-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to his lower torso and was taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Police closed off the scene of the crime and opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities were investigating the possibility that a fight broke out before the shooting between the victims and the suspects. Police spokesperson Moshe Weizman was quoted by Ynet saying that it had yet to be determined whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle.

The two suspects were to be brought before the Nazareth Magistrate’s Court on Saturday for extension of their remand, Israel Radio reported.

Residents of the neighborhood told Ynet that the victims of the shooting were “good people who weren’t involved in conflicts with others. Everyone’s surprised and can’t digest the incident.”
