Worker killed in chemical plant explosion

Employee was welding a tank containing fuel oil

A chemical plant employee was killed on Thursday when a tank exploded at the facility in the industrial zone of the southern Hebron Hills.

Shlomi Ashkenazi, a Jerusalem-based paramedic who was among those called to the fuel oil plant, told Channel 2 News that the 45-year-old worker was welding a tank that was about half full when it exploded. The blast threw the man approximately 60 meters (200 feet). Paramedics from Magen David Adom (MDA) confirmed his death when they arrived on the scene.
