WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish police say some 20 people have been evacuated from a house in the capital’s downtown area after workers uncovered a 500-kilo (1,100-pound) World War II bomb under the sidewalk.

Agnieszka Hamelusz, a spokeswoman for central Warsaw police, said Tuesday that soldiers were preparing to transport the bomb out of the city to have it “neutralized.”

She said some 20 residents, mostly elderly and disabled, were evacuated from a house nearest to the bomb after it was uncovered by workers repairing water pipes.

Warsaw suffered from severe bombings by the Nazis, especially at the start of the war in September 1939 and during the city’s 63 days of failed revolt against occupying German troops in the fall of 1944.
