British boy band member Harry Styles is trying to master Hebrew after taking an interest in Judaism.

“Harry’s made it his mission to learn to speak and write Hebrew. His obsession started with his tattoos, but now he’s becoming very serious about learning as much as he can,” a friend of Styles’s told The Daily Star.

The unnamed friend said Styles, a member of popular boy band One Direction, intends to devote 2014 to learning the language.

“So far he’s learnt to write his name and One Direction in Hebrew,” he said of the 19-year-old singer, who tattooed his sister Gemma’s name in Hebrew on his arm in 2012.

According to the unnamed pal, Styles has also been taking an interest in Judaism, about which he has been learning from director Ben Winston.

“Harry also loves kosher food. He regularly visits kosher restaurants in New York,” he said. “Ben has been helping him with Jewish cultural tips and Harry has even taken the prayers at their house on the Sabbath.”

He added that One Direction would play in Israel in the coming year, enabling Styles to practice his newly acquired language skills.

In November Styles’s father, Des Styles, used Twitter to put to bed rumors that his son was Jewish.

“Still loads re H being Jewish. He defo ain’t,” he wrote in November.

In August, the elder Styles tweeted, “Thanks for pointing out why he might be Jewish with the tattoos and jewellery, I get that. Apologies. But he’s defo not. X.”

In an earlier tweet, he wrote, “No idea where any rumours came from in but, categorically, he is 0% Jewish. Not at all.X.”
