Ben Gurion International Airport on Tuesday mounted a large mock disaster exercise involving 1,000 representatives of the airport, the defense and health ministries, the air force, police, emergency services and the IDF Home Front Command.

The exercise, dubbed “Pelican,” centered on an imaginary crash at the airport by a Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet carrying hundreds of passengers.

An Israel Airports Authority spokesman warned passengers that they might see more emergency vehicles than usual in and around the airport and on the tarmac because of the exercise.

The drill was not expected to affect regular flight schedules.
