Eli Tabib, beleagured former owner of the soccer team Hapoel Tel Aviv, was indicted on Wednesday in a Tel Aviv court for assaulting a minor, destroying evidence of the act and obstructing justice.
The incident occurred in March, when Tabib allegedly attacked an underage fan protesting outside his house. According to the police, Tabib subsequently deleted a recording of the assault captured by his home security cameras.
Tabib, who acquired full ownership of Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2011, became the target of well-publicized fan protests following his firing of coach Dror Kashtan, which led to the resignation of many senior staffers in the organization. He has also been accused by fans of mismanaging club funds, selling too many top players to European teams, and treating players, fans and staff dismissively.
Last month, in response to fan protests, Tabib signed away his power of attorney over the team to lawyer Yoav Moser, who was to hold an auction for the sale of the club, effectively removing Tabib as owner.
On Wednesday, a business consortium headed by former MK Haim Ramon announced that it had purchased the club. Tabib is expected to receive NIS 12 million for the sale.
