As Israel sweltered in the grips of a sizzling heat wave, with temperatures in Jerusalem breaking 100º Fahrenheit (40º Celcius), the country broke its electricity use record Monday for the second day in a row.

According to figures announced by the Israel Electric Corporation, energy use broke an all-time record as Israelis tried to keep cool — surpassing an all-time high set on Sunday.

On Monday, Israelis hit a consumption record of 12,800 megawatts of power set at 2:09 p.m., up from Sunday’s record-breaking high point of 12,525.

The heat wave afflicting Israel was expected to continue through the week, meaning Monday’s record may be as short-lived as Sunday’s.
