Israeli wins bronze at World Judo Championships

Tal Flicker defeats Georgii Zantaraia in under 66 kilograms category, bringing home Israel’s 9th ever medal at tournament

An Israeli judoka won a bronze medal Tuesday at the World Judo Championships, beating one of the world’s highest ranked judokas in the third place match.

To win the bronze medal in the under 66 kilograms (145 pounds) category, Tal Flicker defeated Ukraine’s Georgii Zantaraia, who won the gold medal in the grouping during April’s European Judo Championships.

It was Israel’s ninth ever medal at the World Judo Championships.

As a prize for his success, Flicker will receive NIS 60,000 ($17,000) from the Israel Olympic Committee, the Culture and Sports Ministry and the Israel Sports Betting Board, half of which will go to his coach Oren Smadja.

President Reuven Rivlin called Flicker after he received the medal, telling him his success at the tournament was “just the beginning.”

“I am sure that with your ability you will go far,” Rivlin told Flicker, according to the Walla news site. “You will be the world champion and bring us a medal at the Olympics.”

On the women’s side, Israeli Gili Cohen finished in fifth place in the under 52 kilograms (115 pounds) category, falling to Russian judoka Natalia Kuziutina.

The tournament, which began Monday, ends on September 3.
