Jonathan Pollard rushed to hospital

US Navy engineer convicted of espionage falls ill; chief rabbi urges Jews to read psalms for his recovery

Jonathan Pollard was rushed from his prison cell to a North Carolina hospital after feeling ill on Friday afternoon.

Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yona Metzger subsequently called on Jews in Israel and abroad to read psalms in Pollard’s honor, according to a Ynet News report. The report added that President Shimon Peres urged Israelis to pray for Pollard’s swift recovery.

Peres is slated to meet with US President Barack Obama in June. Israel Radio reported on Friday afternoon that Peres was to take up the issue of Pollard’s release with Obama, carrying with him a letter of support signed by 80 Israeli MKs.

Pollard, born in Texas, worked as a civilian intelligence analyst for the US Navy. In 1987 he was convicted of selling Israel classified information and he is serving a life sentence. He was given Israeli citizenship in 1995.

Pollard has served 26 years of his life sentence.
