Kiryat Shmona mayor suspected of taking bribes

Nissim Malka interrogated by anti-corruption unit for various alleged offenses, barred from entering municipal offices

Kiryat Shmona Mayor Nissim Malka was questioned under caution earlier this week on suspicion of accepting bribes and illegal donations during the northern city’s 2013 election campaign in exchange for promoting the interests of local business owners, it was cleared for publication Wednesday.

Malka is suspected of violating the election financing law, bribery, fraud, breach of trust, and attempting to obstruct the investigation in his case.

He was arrested on Monday and interrogated by officers of the Lahav 433 anti-corruption unit. He was later released under restrictive conditions, including a five-day house arrest and a 15-day ban from entering City Hall.

More than 40 Kiryat Shmona officials and municipal employees were questioned by police over the last two weeks in connection with Malka’s case, Channel 10 reported.
