Labor’s last seat held for ex-prez, 93
Yitzhak Navon says he’s honored to be given 120th slot on party roster for March 17 elections
In a highly symbolic move, the Zionist Camp — the combined Labor-Hatnua party list — has reserved its 120th spot for former president Yitzhak Navon in the upcoming elections.
Navon, 93, served as Israel’s fifth president between 1978 and 1983 and as a Labor Party MK, and left politics in 1992.
The Knesset has a total of 120 seats, making the odds of the Labor Party winning 120 seats vanishingly slim. The latest polls indicate Labor may get as many as 24 seats, leaving Navon more than a few seats shy of a renewed political career.
Though the odds of his return to the Knesset are astronomically small, he thanked his former party for the “distinguished placement,” saying it was “a great honor to be part of the effort and the list.”
“I agreed to join the list out of believe in a common way and also out of hope of seeing an integration of old and young, party veterans alongside new forces, because there’s no honor greater than this, being a witness to the integration of all the generations,” he said in a statement published on Labor’s website.
