Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition is preparing to submit its own bill to dissolve the Knesset as early as next week, according to Hebrew media reports, a move that would trigger elections.
The reported step comes after opposition parties submitted their own bills to dissolve the parliament, after Haredi faction Degel HaTorah announced yesterday that it has lost faith in Netanyahu and is calling for early elections.
Elections are currently slated for October 27.
The coalition is submitting its own bill to dissolve the Knesset so that it can control both the legislative process and the timing of the vote, according to reports, which suggest that ultra-Orthodox parties are more likely to support a coalition-backed bill than one from the opposition.
If lawmakers ultimately vote to dissolve the Knesset, elections must be held within five months of the vote. The Haredi parties reportedly favor an election in early September.
