Police chief calls for rethink of drug policy

Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino says Israeli authorities should reexamine their position on the illegality of soft drug usage, and consider decriminalizing marijuana possession.

Speaking at a school in Beit Shemesh, Danino says he has noticed an increase in public calls to legalize the use of cannabis and other drugs.

“I think it is time that the Israeli police, together with the State of Israel, check and reconsider their traditional position on the matter,” he says. “I think we should sit down and study what happened [when marijuana possession was decriminalized] in other locations across the world.”
