Man suspected of killing wife hours after police called to scene

Police suspect a Tel Aviv man killed his wife, 67, early Thursday morning, two hours after a police officer called to scene left after determining the man was not a threat.

The man, 70, is being held by police. Police believe he stabbed his wife to death.

Neighbors told Ynet news that domestic confrontations were often heard from the apartment, and that police had been called to the house several times, including on Wednesday night.

A police commander for the area said an officer was dispatched to the scene at 11 p.m. Wednesday night, but determined by looking through the window that the husband was acting responsibly and left the scene.

At 1 a.m. Thursday police received a call that a woman had been found dead at the couple’s apartment, in the working class Hatikvah neighborhood in south Tel Aviv.

Alon Magen, a police commander for the neighborhood substation, said officials were looking into the incident.
