Matisyahu throws matzah ball first pitch at Mets game

Jewish rapper Matisyahu threw out a soup-er opening pitch at the New York Mets game in Queens over the weekend.

Invited to the game on Sunday at Citi Field to celebrate Jewish Heritage Day, Matisyahu swapped out the traditional baseball for a fresh matzah ball — plucked directly from a bowl of soup.

The rapper — best known for his heavily Jewish-themed hits including “One Day” and “King Without a Crown” — was accompanied on the mound by actor Ezra Miller, star of “The Flash.”

In videos shared on social media from the game, Miller presented Matisyahu with a bowl of matzah ball soup, and the rapper selected his specimen for the pitch. Miller then moved to home plate.

Both Miller and Matisyahu showed up in all-white jumpsuits with a large Hebrew letter “Alef” displayed on the back. Miller appeared to be wearing a kippa on top of a Mets baseball cap.

Matisyahu also took a sip from the container of soup before his throw.

The matzah ball exhibited surprisingly aerodynamic qualities for an Ashkenazi staple generally known for being dense and stodgy. Nevertheless, it broke apart as it hit the ground, despite Miller’s attempt to dive for the catch.

On Instagram, the rapper captioned video of the throw as “MATZAH BALL MADNESS ON THE MOUND,” thanking the Mets for allowing “the first-ever matzah ball pitch.”

According to The New York Post, the matzah balls were made by Miller, who used a family recipe, and “adjusted the recipe — more flour and a denser ball” for the occasion.

The Mets won 6-3 against the Seattle Mariners.
