Obama takes to Twitter to defend Iran nuclear deal
In responses to posts from Republican critics of the pact, president reiterates alternative is war

US President Barack Obama turned to Twitter Wednesday to take on Republican opponents of his Iran nuclear deal.
Hours before Obama delivered a speech at American University defending the deal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tweeted at the president, “Let’s hope @POTUS avoids obviously untrue talking points about the #IranDeal being a choice between a bad deal and war. It isn’t.”
Using his personal @POTUS account, launched in May, Obama shot back, “The choice is ultimately between diplomacy and war. Iran’s nuclear program accelerates if Congress kills the deal.”
Obama then continued the 140-character-limited back-and-forth, responding to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who had written earlier, “Mr. President, Americans deserve to know the details about the secret side deals”
The president countered, “Important detail – there are no secret deals. My staff can brief you on any question about any part of the deal.”
This is not the first time that Obama has used Twitter to defend the deal. In late July, the White House created the account @TheIranDeal, which now has 20,000 followers, to “set the record straight.”
But former Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer appeared to cast this latest Twitter clash as one of greater significance, comparing it to the ongoing feud between hip-hop stars Drake and Meek Mill.
“It’s actually Drake-Meek Mill with the Republicans playing the role of Meek. Less talented, less popular, always lose,” Pfeiffer wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
