A Palestinian man was shot at a checkpoint in Abu Dis near Jerusalem after he tried to stab a Border Police guard late Thursday night, Israel Radio reported.

The Border Police guards manning the checkpoint were inspecting another car when a Palestinian man in his 20s came at them, brandishing a knife, according to the report.

One of the guards spotted the man and shouted at him to stop. When he failed to do so, he was shot, and later died of his wounds.

This was the second incident involving a death in a matter of hours, and the third incident involving a suspected attack on Israelis or soldiers in 24 hours.

Earlier on Thursday, a Palestinian man was shot to death at Tapuah Junction near the West Bank city of Ariel Thursday when he fired a flare gun toward Israelis at a hitchhiking stand.

IDF soldiers in the area opened fire, killing him on the spot, Ynet reported. No one else was injured in the incident.

Police sappers were checking the body for explosives, and the road was closed to traffic.

The junction has been the site of several terror attacks in the past, including a fatal stabbing in April.

Earlier Thursday, an IDF officer was nearly run over while conducting operations near the West Bank village of Naalin.

The officer, a company commander, was standing outside his vehicle during the operation when a Palestinian driver allegedly attempted to ram him. Soldiers opened fire at the car, and the driver fled. The vehicle was found abandoned several hours later.
