A Belgian police officer received a knife wound to the head and his alleged attacker was shot and left in “serious condition” on Monday, Brussels police said.

The incident took place in Maximilien Park, an area known as a gathering point for mainly North African immigrants hoping to head on to Britain, police spokeswoman Ilse Van Der Keere said.

Van De Keere said that “the man attacked one of our colleagues with a knife” and that a second officer shot the attacker and “seriously wounded him” in the head and leg.

She said that the full details of the incident were not yet clear.

The suspect is receiving treatment and the incident is under investigation.
