An Egyptian protester was allegedly pushed from his wheelchair by a police major-general outside the Heliopolis presidential compound during a protest of physically challenged persons, the Egypt Independent reported online Thursday.

The protesters were demanding a meeting with Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi and were trying to reach the gates of the compound at the time of the reported assault.

Other physically challenged protesters were bodily prevented from reaching the compound. The demonstrators were demanding housing and jobs for the disabled, as well as enforcement and protection of their legal rights.

According to the report, the Egyptian presidential adviser for legal affairs, Mohammed Fouad Gadallah, apologized to the protester who was pushed out of his chair.
