A former Hamas official was kidnapped while driving his car in Damascus on Saturday, the London-based newspaper Al-Hayat reported Monday.

According to Palestinian sources quoted in Al-Hayat, Hamas leaders have asked Syrian authorities for help in finding the former official, 64-year-old Mustafa Lidawi.

Lidawi was expelled from Israel to the Gaza Strip in 1991, and in later years acted as Hamas’s liaison to Lebanon, Iran and Syria. A few years ago he left politics and started a career as a journalist, mainly for Arabic-language news stations in Iran.
