An Israeli man has been arrested in Dubai on suspicion of drug trafficking, Hebrew media reported Friday.

The suspect, a resident of Israel in his early 30s, will appear Sunday before a local court for a remand hearing.

“We know that he is being held in Dubai after he was arrested of trafficking a large quantity of drugs. We are in touch with the narcotics police in Dubai,” Uri Ben-Natan told Channel 12 news.

Ben-Natan also said he would be better able to address the suspicions “when contact is made with our client.”

The Foreign Ministry said it did not yet have any information on the case.

According to the Walla news site, the Israeli man is suspected of involvement in smuggling dozens of kilograms of heroin that Emirati authorities found in a car.

The news site said the suspect was also incriminated by a police agent in Israel last year in the sale of a half kilogram of cocaine. It was not clear from the report if he was ever charged.

Dubai has strict anti-drug laws, with those convicted of drug trafficking facing a possible death sentence.
