Qatar asked Israel for permission to construct an airport in the Gaza Strip, which would be under its security supervision, Mohammed al-Emadi, Doha’s point man for the coastal enclave, tells a Palestinian news site.
Emadi says Qatar proposed to Israel building an airport that would “principally” be under its supervision, with all flights leaving and returning to Gaza through Doha.
He says Israel informed him the request “would be studied,” but “procrastinated” in responding. Instead, Emadi says Israel offered Doha an airport in Israel for Palestinian use.
Israel and Egypt imposed an air, land and sea blockade of Gaza after the Hamas terror group seized power.
Qatar often serves as a mediator between the enemies. The energy-rich Gulf state also has overseen large reconstruction projects in the war-battered territory.
