Rabbi Ovadia Yosef was hospitalized at Ein Kerem Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem on Sunday, complaining of back pain following his arrival there for an examination.

“Rabbi Ovadia Yosef was admitted to Hadassah for orthopedic treatment and a comprehensive medical evaluation. There has been no significant change in his health condition in recent days,” the hospital said in a statement.

The elderly rabbi was suffering from increasing pain in his leg and was unable to give his normal Shabbat sermon the previous day, Israel National News reported.

Yosef, 92, was lightly injured after he fainted and fell in his home earlier this month. In January he was hospitalized for several days after suffering a minor stroke.

The Baghdad-born, outspoken Yosef served as the Sephardic chief rabbi from 1973 to 1983. He is a noted authority on Jewish law and the spiritual leader of the Shas political party.
