Ben Gurion University quashes split-off Arab Student Day

Ben Gurion University enraged its Arab student population by deciding to ban Arab Student Day, Army Radio reported on Wednesday. Arab students felt that the Student Day celebrations, which typically feature live music, fairs, and food stalls, do not cater to Arab culture.

“Aside from the fact that there are no performances in Arabic, holding the event from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m is not appropriate for female Arab students. Additionally, Muslim students do not drink alcohol and they may not participate in a celebration that has alcohol,” said Huda Abu Obeid, a masters student at Ben Gurion.

Abu Obeid and Anes Abu Dabs had already begun preparations for the alternative event, which hoped to feature Arab bands and stand-up comedians. Despite support from the Ben Gurion University Student Union, the university administration pulled the plug.

Ben Gurion University responded saying that Student Day is for the entire student body, including those of Arab descent, and that the Dean of Students would not approve an alternative, simultaneous event for Arabs or any other racial minority.

The dean reportedly supported the scheduling of a different event for Arab students outside the framework of Student Day and offered financial backing for it.
