French President Nicolas Sarkozy sent a congratulatory letter to President Shimon Peres on the occasion of Israel’s Independence Day, Ynet News reported.

“After the Toulouse disaster struck at both our countries so cruelly,” wrote Sarkozy in reference to the March murders of an adult and three young children outside a Jewish school in the southern French city, “I would like to assure you that the French authorities are determined to fight an all-out war against the scourge of anti-Semitism.”

The French president faces what political pundits consider are insurmountable odds in a run-off election on May 6 against the Socialist party candidate Francois Hollande.
