The Syrian state news agency on Tuesday reported that an “armed terrorist group” assassinated Air Force Major General Abdullah al-Khalidi in the Damascus neighborhood of Rukn al-Din.

Al-Khalidi, a senior member of the Syrian Air Force command, according to AFP, was shot while exiting his car.

Al Jazeera reported that opposition activists claimed Khalidi was going to defect, so the regime assassinated him first.
