1 dead in suspected car bombing in Berlin
Investigators working to identify driver of vehicle who was only casualty of blast
BERLIN — Police in Berlin said they suspect a bomb caused the explosion that killed a man who was driving through the German capital early Tuesday.
The explosion occurred at about 8 a.m. local time in the western district of Charlottenburg on a busy street leading into the heart of the German capital.
Photos from the scene showed the wreckage of a Berlin-registered silver VW Passat station wagon, its windows blown out and its front end smashed in, about a kilometer (half mile) from the capital’s landmark Victory Column.
“Investigators are working on the assumption that it was an explosive device” inside or on the vehicle that caused the blast, said Carsten Mueller, deputy chief spokesman for Berlin police.

He said investigators were still trying to determine the man’s identity and couldn’t immediately provide details about the vehicle.
The city has seen a spate of violence linked to biker gangs involved in the drugs trade in recent years, but Mueller would not speculate on any possible background to the crime. Police were looking into all possible scenarios, he said.
