Rising Israeli tennis star, Yishai Oliel, 17, narrowly missed the chance to be named champion of the Australian Open junior Grand Slam, after an unexpected defeat by his Hungarian opponent in the boys’ final on Saturday.

Oliel, who was seeded fourth in the tournament, was defeated by 16-year-old Zsombor Piros, who is ranked in 15th place, despite winning the first set. He eventually lost the match by a score of 4-6 6-4 6-3.

Oliel, a native of Ramle, near Tel Aviv, had advanced to the junior boys’ finals after defeating top seed Yibing Wu from China 6-4 3-6 6-2 in the semifinals earlier in the week.

At the trophy ceremony, Oliel teared up and was too overwhelmed by emotion to say anything.

Oliel is a two-time Junior Orange Bowl champion, having won in 2012 and 2014. He and Czech player Patrik Rikl won the 2016 French Open Boys’ Doubles title.
