The body of Shani Maril, a 12-year-old girl from Modiin who was killed last week in a ferry fire in Thailand during a family trip to celebrate her bat mitzvah, was positively identified on Monday.
The identification process was accomplished through DNA samples that were brought from Thailand to Israel with assistance from the Foreign Ministry.
The DNA samples, which were examined in Israel, determined conclusively that the body was that of Maril, the only fatality in the fire that broke out on a ferry near the beach resort island of Phuket.
Foreign Ministry officials are trying to speed up the process of sending Maril’s body home despite the three-day festival marking the new year currently being celebrated in Thailand.
