A Twitter account supporting the Islamic State claimed that dozens of Kurdish peshmerga fighters were killed, and 170 taken prisoner by IS militants, Reuters reported on Monday.
The Islamist fighters also took weapons from the Kurdish forces, the report said.
The peshmerga are the Kurdistan Regional Government’s soldiers, and have been increasingly involved in battling IS in recent weeks.
However, according to reports by numerous news organizations, Kurdish forces recorded an important strategic achievement as they recaptured the Mosul Dam in concert with US fighter planes. IS denies the claim.
During the mission, US President Barack Obama emphasized its importance. “The failure of the Mosul Dam could threaten the lives of large numbers of civilians, endanger US personnel and facilities, including the US Embassy in Baghdad, and prevent the Iraqi government from providing critical services to the Iraqi populace,” he said.
