Heavy police presence as sides rally in Ashkelon
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleA video from Ashkelon shows heavy police presence as hundreds of protesters in support of and against a Palestinian hunger-striking detainee rally on opposite ends of a main junction in the southern city.
On one side, some hundred right-wingers wave Israeli flags outside Barzilai hospital, where Mohammad Allaan is being held.
About 100 meters away, a similar number of pro-Palestinian protesters rally in support of Allaan, including MK Hanin Zoabi. The video shows low-level scuffles and arguments breaking out between activists and police.
Protesters on both sides are accused of throwing stones as the protest turned violent and some 10 people have been arrested, according to Israeli reports.
