Supreme Court orders tax increase on rolling tobacco
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleThe High Court has ordered Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon to raise the tax on rolling tobacco to equal the rate of taxes on cigarettes.
In their decision, Jusices Dafna Barak-Erez, George Kara, and Alex Stein say that rolling tobacco is “the same functional product” as cigarettes and the tax discrepancy was “aimed at directing behaviors that have an impact on health.”
The decision comes in response to a High Court petition filed by several anti-smoking groups.
