A Saudi donation of almost $16 million will enable the United Nations to provide financial assistance to thousands of Gazan families affected by last year’s Operation Pillar of Defense, the UN said on Wednesday.
“Over 7,000 refugee families in Gaza will receive financial support from UNRWA to repair and reconstruct homes damaged during the November conflict,” the refugee agency said in a statement.
“We have never before been able to provide this scale of support for war-damaged refugees’ shelters in such a short time,” the director of UNRWA’s operations in Gaza, Robert Turner, said.
The funds are due to be distributed starting this month.
The eight-day conflict in November 2012 claimed the lives of six Israelis, including two soldiers, and 177 Palestinians, 120 of whom were terrorists, according to IDF figures. Nine hundred Palestinians were injured in the fighting.
