Military llamas keep kashrut this Passover

The llamas and dogs fighting in the army of the Jewish state keep kosher on Passover, eating special food during the holiday.

According to an article in the army spokesperson’s blog, 99% of the animals have a special diet during the holiday. The wheat-less alternatives have been improved over recent years, enabling the IDF’s non-human enlistees to eat Kosher-for-Passover food in accordance with their usual diet.

Rabbi Maj. Asher Landau, in charge of keeping the IDF kosher, told the blog that the food is in compliance with Jewish law and also with the needs of every animal. Everything was checked and OK’d by the military veterinarians, he said.

The IDF uses dogs to sniff out explosives and for rescue work, among other roles. Llamas are used to carry equipment and ammunition over difficult terrain.
