Knesset to honor Canadian who shot parliament gunman

Kevin Vickers, in Israel for a security conference, will be recognized by the Knesset speaker and meet with him in his chambers

TORONTO — The Canadian Parliament’s sergeant-at-arms, who shot a gunman inside the Parliament building last month, will be honored by Israel’s Knesset.

Kevin Vickers, who is in Israel for a security conference, will be recognized Wednesday by the Knesset speaker, Yuli Edelstein, and will meet with Edelstein in his chambers.

Vickers, 58, a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, shot and killed Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who was firing his weapon in the Hall of Honor of Parliament in Ottawa on the morning of October 22. Zehaf-Bibeau had shot and killed a soldier guarding the National War Memorial.

Hailed as a hero, Vickers received a standing ovation from Canadian lawmakers the following day.

He and other Canadian security and police officials are in Israel for the third international homeland security conference to examine intelligence, counter-terrorism and law enforcement.

Vickers is scheduled to be in the Knesset’s audience gallery when he receives his recognition. He also is scheduled to meet with Edelstein in the speaker’s chambers.
