Italian president plants tree in Jerusalem
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleItalian President Sergio Mattarella, visiting Israel on a state trip, plants an olive tree in a KKL-JNF grove in Jerusalem, saying he’s proud to do so “in light of the recent destruction in Italy.”
“The friendship between Israel and Italy is brave and strong and nothing will dampen it,” he says during a ceremony, according to a statement.
“I am happy to be able to send a message of peace and tranquility from this place to the people of Italy.”
Mattarella has remained in Israel despite a 6.6 earthquake striking Italy this morning, collapsing some buildings and leading to jitters, though no fatalities have been reported.
