An Israeli man has been charged with stealing a portable building from the site of the massacre at the desert rave in Kibbutz Re’im after entering the area on the pretense of helping to look for bodies.

According to charges filed in the Beersheba Magistrate’s Court and made public Sunday, Amir Tias, 44, approached soldiers carrying out searches at the scene and said he wanted to join the efforts to find victims.

However, once he reached the site, he attached his vehicle to a bullet-riddled trailer and towed it back to his business in Beersheba. The trailer had been used by organizers of the music festival.

“This is a defendant who took advantage of the most difficult hour of the State of Israel, in the midst of a horrific war in which more than one thousand civilians and members of the security forces were killed. He arrived at the area where Israeli civilians were massacred, entered the area under the pretext that he came to assist the security forces in locating missing persons, taking advantage of the difficult circumstances where the security forces were busy locating bodies and missing people, broke into the trailer and stole it from the place,” the indictment said.

Tias was also charged with stealing $10,000 and several credit cards from the trailer.

Tias faces charges of vehicle theft, criminal trespassing, burglary and other crimes. Police asked that he be held in custody until the end of legal proceedings against him.
