On Friday morning, Nissim Levy, 28, took out the trash when leaving his home. A few hours later, the Lod resident realized that in addition to his family’s garbage, he had thrown away 15,000 shekels in gift money from a party celebrating his daughter’s birth.

“Suddenly I remembered that the presents that I received at the party to celebrate the birth of our newborn daughter were in the bags I threw out. I wanted to cover my overdraft, so I kept the money in a bag until I could deposit it in the bank,” Levy told Yedioth Aharonoth.

Levy headed back to his house at a run, but to his chagrin found that the dumpsters had already been emptied. After a series of panicked calls to the municipality, the garbage truck that had emptied the dumpsters was located, on its way to the dump.

Luckily for Levy, the municipality officials were sympathetic to his conundrum, and ordered the eight tons of garbage in the truck dumped in an open lot in an industrial area of the city.

There, Levy and his friends searched through the seemingly endless piles of stinky refuse until an hour later, 6,000 shekels in cash were found in a bag. However, Levy’s luck only held out so far. The bag in which the money was stashed ripped, and individual bills and checks were strewn throughout the rubbish and household slop. The search went on for two more hours, until Levy and his friends were able to recover most of the 15,000 shekels, bill by bill.

“It was smelly, but worth the effort,” Levy told Yedioth.

Now the only question is whether the bank will object to a deposit of foul-smelling cash.
