Tel Aviv District Court on Sunday approved MK Eitan Cabel’s candidacy for chairman of the Histadrut Labor Union.
Cabel said the decision was the opening signal for a long journey to return the Histadrut to its position as an important social-economic body in Israel.
Elections for the Histadrut leadership will be held in May. Cabel’s candidacy came into question over claims that he had not been a member of the labor organization for long enough to participate in the elections.
Israel Radio said that MK Amir Peretz (Labor) announced he will drop his own candidacy, as he had earlier promised to do, in order to back Cabel’s challenge.
